The pristine ice wilderness of Antarctica is an unforgettable destination, teeming with an abundance of wildlife and dramatic sights. A journey of great discovery via Buenos Aires and Ushuaia. Specialist guides and full board during your expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula.
Highlights: Buenos Aires – Tierra del Fuego – Antarctic Peninsula
Arrive into Buenos Aires where you will be met and driven to your hotel. The majority of Argentines are of European descent, mainly Italians. Indeed there’s a saying that an Argentinian is an Italian who speaks Spanish, thinks like the French but would secretly like to be British. European influences are prominent in the buildings and squares of the city.
City tour taking in some of the key places in Buenos Aires, including the Plaza de Mayo, San Telmo and La Boca before continuing to the Puerto Madero docklands which have undergone complete transformation into a thriving area of bars and restaurants. The tour ends at the elegant district of Recoleta. In the evening a tango show is included, with dinner.
Free day to explore Buenos Aires in your own time. If you would like us to book particular arrangements, such as tango classes, a football tour of La Bombanera (Boca Juniors) or El Monumental (River Plate), cycle rides, a Pope Francis tour, or a visit to the underground tunnels of Buenos Aires then please let us know.
Fly to Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego. Afternoon city tour of this southernmost city in the world set between the Beagle Channel and the Martial Mountain chain, including the interesting End of the World Museum with artefacts from the indigenous Yamanas, plus information and exhibits about the first missionaries and settlers.
Morning at leisure in Ushuaia. Please let us know if you would like us to book a tour of Tierra del Fuego National Park taking in Laguna Verde and Lapataia Bay. In the afternoon transfer to the port to embark for your Silversea Explorer itinerary.
It takes a day and a half to cross Drake’s Passage to reach the Antarctic Peninsula but wildlife opportunities are there from the start. Watch out for white-chinned petrels, black-browed albatrosses and sooty sheerwaters.
The Antarctic Peninsula. At Brown Bluff it may be possible to see Adelie and Gentoo penguin colonies. Arrive at Deception Island via the narrow entrance known as Neptune’s Bellows and visit the former research station (and WW11 listening post) at Port Lockroy, now a museum.
The captain will begin the return journey across Drake’s Passage to reach Tierra del Fuego. Recommended reading: The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard who was with Robert Falcon Scott and Lawrence Oates on the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition over 100 years ago.
